The Conversation

She looked me dead in the eye and said “I love you”

I froze. Lying never crossed my mind but neither did breaking her heart. I told her that she was loving the wrong guy. Tears fell. I’m skilled with words but I wasn’t prepared for this. My unprepared mouth muttered uncomfortable words. Her heart sank. I took my own advice and delivered the truth. “You don’t fulfil me” I proclaimed. Her body collapsed. A broken soul and a broken man.

Only now do I realise I lied. I don’t know what fulfils me. It might have been her.
